Pharm-ChemBio Industry Outreach Day 2019

The UCSD Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry & the Chemistry-Biology Interfaces (CBI) Training Grant held its annual Industry Day event on June 21, 2019 in the NSB Auditorium. The goal of this event was to enhance the interaction between our PhD students and postdoctoral associates with our colleagues in industry. The event featured speakers primarily from biotech, pharm, and nanotech fields. The program included talks by industrial scientists, lightning talks by doctoral students, and a panel discussion to provide advice to graduate students on how to pursue a career in industry.

Friday, January 11th, 2019

CBI students and faculty visted Pfizer on Friday, January 11th, 2019. While visiting, students toured the structural biology and synthetic chemistry labs, where Pfizer scientists detailed how they use structure-based drug design in their drug discovery efforts. Thank you Dr. Komor for arranging and leading the tour!


3rd Annual CBI Research Symposium

CBI Trainees, Faculty, and alumni attended the program's 3rd annual CBI Research Symposium on Saturday September 15th, 2018. Trainees and alumni of the program gave research presentations and lightning talks, followed by a keynote talk by Dr. Alexis Komor entitled "Base Editing: Performing Chemistry on the Genome."

CBI-CRIN Industry Day 2018

CBI Annual Research Symposium 2017

September 22, 2017

The CBI Program hosted its second annual research symposium on Friday September 22, 2017 from 1-5pm. CBI program director Mike Burkart gave a short introduction to the CBI Program for those new to the program. Current CBI Trainees gave short presentations on their ongoing research to fellow students, CBI faculty, and mentors. Afterwards, guest speaker Dr. Floyd Romesberg from the Scripps Research Institute gave a special keynote talk entitled “A semi-synthetic organism that stores and retrieves increased genetic information.” See the Symposium program.

After the keynote talk by Dr. Romesberg, attendees gathered on the lawn at Stonehenge for a BBQ. Thank you to all of those who attended!

Industry Tour - Janssen Pharmaceuticals

August 25, 2017

The CBI program hosted a tour of Janssen Pharmaceuticals on Friday August 25th, 2017. Janssen is a leading pharmaceutical company and part of the Johnson & Johnson family of companies. CBI Trainees and alum made the short trip to Janssen’s very local campus. Dr. Anders Brunmark, Director of the Discovery Sciences Division, led the group on an enthusiastic tour of Janssen’s impressive facilities.

Trainees, alum, and faculty appreciated the opportunity for an up-close look of a pharmaceutical company in our own San Diego community.

Many thanks to Janssen, our host Dr. Anders Brunmark, and Dr. Scott Bembenek for arranging the very informative visit!

CBI Career Day

June 16, 2017

The CBI program held its first ever Career Day on Friday June 16th from 1-5pm in the Natural Sciences Building. The program featured industry talks by representatives from Pfizer, GNF, Janssen, as well as UCSD’s Division of Biology. See program schedule.

Dr. Jon Loren of the Genomics Institute of the Novartis Research Foundation started the talks, discussing key specifics on the job application process.

UC San Diego's Dr. Stephen Mayfield, of the Division of Biological Sciences and director of Cal-CAB (California Center for Algae Biotechnology) gave a talk on bio manufacturing and getting started as an entrepreneur. Recent UCSD alum and current Senior Scientist at Pfizer Dr. Matthew Del Bel talked about his research and work in medicinal chemistry at Pfizer. He offered grads a fresh perspective on entering the job force.

Dr. Scott Bembenek talks about his career as Principal Scientist in the Computer Aided Drug Discovery Group at Janssen, the pharmaceutical company of Johnson and Johnson.

Inaugural CBI Research Symposium

August 24, 2016

The Chemistry-Biology Interfaces Training Program hosted its inaugural Annual CBI Research Symposium on Wednesday, August 24th in Pacific Hall 4500. CBI Mentor, Dr. Kamil Godula, was the keynote speaker. The previous cohort gave 15 minute presentations, while the newest trainees gave 5-minute elevator pitches on their research. A BBQ at Stonehenge immediately followed with CBI co-PI's Dr. Mike Burkart and Dr. Nathan Gianneschi grilling up burgers for everyone! The event was a great success!
